Make no mistake about it. Winning on the run rule is more fun than losing on it. Ask the Claremore Zebra baseball coaches and players because they know from both views. Less than 48 hours after losing to Glendale, Mo. 11-1, the Zebras stormed back with a 12-1 victory over Skiatook at Legendary Legion Field Monday afternoon. The Zebras maintained pace for a district title while improving to 13-6. It was Claremore’s fifth victory in six conference games. Skiatook dropped to 3-1 and 8-11. Zebra pitcher Taylor Davis spotted the Bulldogs a first inning run by allowing back-to-back doubles. After that, the junior right hander retired 14 of the next 15 batters. Only a two-out walk in the third inning hindered his effort. Claremore blew the game open in the fourth inning. The Zebras claimed just four base hits in the frame, but scored eight runs. Five walks, a hit batter, and a Skiatook error took care of the rest. All eight runs scored before the first out of the inning was made. It was a carousel of runners around the bases. The Zebra tied the score in the second inning as Bryson Vanover led off with a double. He advanced to third and came home with the run when Trevor Janzen lifted a high fly ball to right field. A ninth grader, Janzen made his rare start as designated hitter pay off. Then with Davis now in his groove on the pitching mound, his teammates stepped up with three go-ahead runs in the third. Brady Brim saw to it two of Skiatook’s miscues fielding the ball aided the Zebra run count. Braden Ulhorn and Dustin Weiesnbach, on base thanks to errors, scored as Brim singled. A Jeff Oxford sacrifice bunt allowed Garrett Wood to add the third run. Skiatook’s run was produced by Nick Rutledge and Braden Whiteley hitting in the Nos. 2 and 3 slots. Rutledge doubled down the third base line and Whiteley followed with a fly ball to right field.
