The Skiatook Bulldogs (1-1) fell to the Oologah Mustangs 35-16 on Friday, Sept. 8th despite a solid team effort and a second half comeback. Oologah stormed out to a 28-3 lead, but in the final two minutes of the third quarter, Skiatook managed to score two times and close the gap to 28-16. However, a turnover that set Oologah up in scoring position with 7 minutes left in the game was the dagger, killing Skiatook’s chance of a come-from-behind victory. Coming into the game, the Mustangs were looking to follow up on an impressive 1 6-7 victory last week against the Collinsville Cardinals. Skiatook also entered the game 1-0 after dominating Glenpool last Friday night. Skiatook’s senior T.K. Wilkerson was once again a monster, accounting for 2 touchdowns. Every time he got the ball it seemed to take half of the Mustang defense to drag him to the turf, but they did good job containing him. Wilkerson also had a couple nice runs called back because of holding in the first half. The story of the game, however, was Oologah’s offense. Senior Cole Dunbar did a little bit of everything for the Mustangs: hauling in long balls, special teams work, and score. Scores were coming from everywhere for Oologah. The first touchdown of the game was scored by Dunbar about eight minutes into the first quarter. A long kick return from Jayden Garner set the Bulldogs up in good field position, but the Mustang defense held strong. Oologah scored two more times in the second quarter—the second score coming on a 47-yard quarterback keeper run right up the gut. The Mustang stampede continued into the second half. Oologah scored on the opening possession, pushing the score out to 28-3. Skiatook finally found the endzone on the following possession. Wilkerson had two long runs that set up his eventual score—a short plunge from inside the 1 yard line. After Oologah fumbled, Wilkerson managed to score once again just two minutes later and close the gap, 28-16, but Oologah scored on the next possession and went up 35-16, icing the victory.
