After losing the opening game of the season to the Grove Ridgerunners, the Skiatook Bulldogs came into the first home game hoping to rebound and get their first win of the season. Hosting Coweta, the Bulldogs looked like there was some rust to shake off, but they also played better as the game went on. Coweta, ranked #13 in Class 5A, came into the game 1-0 after defeating #11 Claremore 60-55. Skiatook scored 4 quick points out of the gate. Senior Gavin Jackson earned the opening points of the game for Skiatook with a tricky floater. Braiden Blackwell, also a senior, hit Jayden Garner for a baseline layup. Less than a minute later, Garner scored again on an assist from Cason Lester, but Coweta’s high powered offense had no problem answering every Bulldogs basket. Coweta’s Seth Anderson hit back-to-back threes, and Braiden Norris added 4 points of his own as the Tigers jumped to a 14-9 lead at the end of the first. Between a three pointer and a converted and-one, Coweta scored 6 points in the opening two minutes of the second. Skiatook struggled to find any scoring. The Bulldogs went scoreless in the second until D’Mari Bell made an elbow jumpshot with 4:21 left. Gavin Jackson made another floater a minute later, but apart from a pair of free throws from Blackwell, Skiatook did not score again in the half. After a 6 point quarter, the Bulldogs were outdistanced by Coweta. The Tigers led 32-15 at the half. Andrew Keathley and Seth Anderson had 9 points each for the Tigers. Three Bulldogs led the team with 4 points apiece. The third quarter was Skiatook’s best. They scored 14 points—7 of which came from Jackson—and Braiden Blackwell added 5 to the total. Unfortunately, Coweta kept up the ferocious scoring pace, going for 21 in the third. The Tigers took a 56-29 lead to the beginning of the fourth, which quickly became a battle of the second-units. Coweta ended up winning 69-42. Jackson was Skiatook’s leading scorer with 13 points. Jayden Garner had 8, while Blackwell added 7.
