The Skiatook Boys were defeated 69-42 by the Collinsville Cardinals in the first part of the Highway 20 Basketball Rivalry for this season. The biggest story of the game was the shooting. Skiatook had one of its worst shooting nights of the year, making only 28 percent of the shot attempts, while the Cardinals couldn’t seem to miss, shooting 63 percent from the field. Being on the bottom of such a wide difference in shooting percentages, Skiatook had no chance of coming away with a win. And it wasn’t that they were taking particularly hard shots—20 of the 24 came from inside the paint—but Collinsville contested everything very well and the shots didn’t want to drop all night long for the Bulldogs. Casen Lester led Skiatook in scoring with 11 points, and Reese Neil had a decent game in his own right, adding 5 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Jayden Garner scored 7 points and also had 5 steals. It wasn’t too lopsided out of the gate. Both teams scored decent in the first quarter, which ended 12-10, in favor of the Cardinals. The second quarter is when things began to go wrong for Skiatook. Collinsville found its groove, scoring 20 points and blowing the lead open. The Cardinals were up 32-18 at the half. The rest of the game looked pretty much the same for Skiatook. As the shooting percentage indicates, the Bulldogs never really got things to click offensively. The Cardinals only followed up the 20 point second quarter with a 21 point third quarter performance, creating an insurmountable lead and going on to win 69-42. One sprite spot of the game was the hustle plays on defense for the Bulldogs. Skiatook show good effort defensively, stealing the ball 10 times through the course of the game. Those steals paid off, turning into 12 transition points. It wasn’t the best night for the Bulldogs, but it was a game Skiatook was sure to learn from so the next time they meet the Cardinals, they will be ready.
