On January 19th and 20th the 5A #3 Skiatook Bulldogs wrestled at home in the Skiatook Wrestling Tournament. The tournament which was sponsored by Exchange Bank featured teams from class 3A to class 6A competing at the Brooks Walton Activity Center getting prepared for dual state, regionals and the state tournament. The Bulldogs are coming off impressive performances the previous two weeks at the Jenks Larry Wilkey Tournament finishing first and the Carl Albert 52nd Malcolm Wade Tournament placing second. The Skiatook Grapplers did not want to disappoint the home crowd as they would end up with five wrestlers in the finals and two in the consolation finals. The Bulldogs ended up with four Champions, one runner up, one third place finisher and one fourth place finisher on their way to winning the team championship. Skiatook finished first with 524.5 team points, Grove finished second with 412.5 team points and Pryor finished third with 378.5 team points. Placing in the medal rounds for the Bulldogs was 106lb Kyle Bowman 4-3 (Fr. 14-12) taking home the fourth-place medal and Heavy Weight Dylon Carnagey 6-1 (Sr. 20-7) brought home the bronze. Hunter Hall 5-1 (Fr. 23-9) at 152lbs was the runner up. Skiatook crowned four champions in 120lb Josh Taylor 6-0 (Fr. 25-1), 138lb Cougar Andersen 5-0 (Fr. 20-5), 170lb Blake Watkins 5-0 (Jr. 21-8) and 195lb Korbin McLaughlin 6-0 (23-3). At 120lbs Skiatook’s Josh Taylor was going for his third straight title in three weeks. The Bulldog in the quarterfinals got a fifteen to two major decision over Ainslie Lane (Bixby). In the semifinals Taylor pinned Fabian Huerta (Catoosa) in the second period securing his spot in the championship. Taylor did not disappoint the home crowd as he beat Luke Montgomery (Bristow) 7-0 making him the 2018 Skiatook Wrestling Tournament Champion. Cougar Andersen Skiatook’s 138lb wrestler had an impressive tournament pinning all five of his opponents. The Freshman would face Dylan McCall (Edison) in the quarterfinals. The Eagle wrestled tough in the first period, but Andersen pinned the Senior thirty-six seconds into the second period. Up next in the semifinals for the Bulldog was Ky Allen from Barnsdall. Andersen pinned the Panther thirty-four seconds into the third period putting him in the championship. In the championship the young mighty Bulldog would face Bennett Sherrer (Pryor). The Freshman Bulldog didn’t waste anytime pinning the veteran Senior in just one minute fifteen seconds in the first period making him the 2018 Skiatook Wresting Tournament. Andersen was also named the Tulsa World’s Wrestler of the Week for his performance in the tournament. Blake Watkins wrestling 170lbs for the Bulldogs had a decision, technical fall and three falls in five matches Friday and Saturday. In the quarterfinals match Watkins faced Trenton Blair (Catoosa). The Bulldog was able to pin the Catoosa wrestler late in the second period putting him in the semifinals. Mason Seth (Muskogee) stepped out on the mat with Watkins to try to advance to the finals but the Bulldog was too much for the Rougher as he won by a fifteen to zero technical fall. In the finals the number two seed Watkins stepped out on the mat with the number one seed Luke Miller (Bristow). The two grapplers went nose to nose the entire three periods. Watkins was able to come away with an eight to four decision on his way to becoming the 2018 Skiatook Wrestling Tournament Champion. Korbin McLaughlin Skiatook’s 195lb wrestler had an impressive four falls in six matches and three of those were in the first period. In the quarterfinals match McLaughlin faced Austin Cliff (Bristow) and was able to pin the Purple Pirate late in the second period. In the semifinals the Bulldog wrestled all three periods with Matt Amos (Grove) and would outscore the Ridgerunner with an eight to two decision putting him in the championship. McLaughlin would face AJ McEntire (Sperry) in the finals. The two grapplers just wrestled a little over a week ago during the dual between the two schools where McLaughlin was able to edge out McEntire five to one. The two battled hard for the whole three periods but it was the mighty Bulldog that came out on top again in a close six to three decision making him the 2018 Skiatook Wrestling Tournament Champion.
