FORT GIBSON – It wasn’t supposed to go this way for the Lady Tigers.

After going 15-0 in the regular season – the only unbeaten record in Class 4A — and winning its first playoff game by five goals, Fort Gibson was stunned at home by Skiatook, 4-3, on Tuesday night in the second round of the OSSAA state playoffs.

Fort Gibson ends the season at 16-1.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs (15-2) struck early, led by Hanna Thompson. Thompson scored three goals in the first 25 minutes of the game, becoming the only player to record a hat trick against the Lady Tigers all season.

Skiatook took a 3-0 lead into the locker room. That deficit would be just too much for Fort Gibson to overcome.

“We dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half,” said Fort Gibson coach Jaime Snyder. “They had the wind in the first half, and that was a factor. We made some mistakes defensively that we don’t usually make.”

The Lady Tigers got the second half start they were looking for. Just three minutes into the second half, Brooke Hatchette received the ball inside the box and send the ball into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The lead went up to three goals again quickly, however, as Courtney Eddings hit a shot from outide the box to make it 4-1.

Things seemed bleak for Fort Gibson, but the 30th minute saw a turnaround. First, Brooke Hatchette’s header on a corner kick trimmed Skiatook’s lead to 4-2. Later in the minute, Zoey Whiteley rebounded the ball after a shot hit the bar and made her shot attempt, making it a 4-3 game.

Despite having chances for the remainder of the game, Fort Gibson couldn’t get past Skiatook goalkeeper Kylie Wilkerson, who made crucial save after crucial save and constantly turned away Fort Gibson’s shot attempts in the final half-hour of the contest.

“We had a fantastic season, but you hate to see it end on a game like that where you were so close so many times,” Snyder said. “The heart we showed coming back from 3-0 to make it a game show what kind of girls we have and what kind of team we are.”

The Lady Tigers outscored their opponents 101-12, but a state championship trophy will have to wait just a little longer.
