The magical run of the Skiatook Bulldogs boys soccer team ended with a 2-0 loss in the 4A state championship to Fort Gibson.

But the season as a whole was far from a loss. It was a year that saw Skiatook’s first soccer state championship appearance since 2014, and a year marked by lots of big achievements on the field.

Senior captain Dylan Geib summed up the year best: “The team is one like no other. It felt more like a family. We shared so many memories and this team will be unforgettable. As for the season, we weren’t supposed to go as far as we did. We weren’t supposed to win districts, and we were the underdogs in every playoff game we played, yet we came out on top. Obviously the championship didn’t go as we wanted, but that doesn’t take away from what we accomplished together.”

The championship he refers to was a matchup with defending state champions, Fort Gibson, at Memorial Stadium in Sand Springs.

Matching up with a heavy-weight defending-champion is never an easy task, but to make matters worse for the Bulldogs, Fort Gibson was in the middle of a hot streak. The championship was the 11th consecutive win for the Tigers, and in that window, Fort Gibson had also outscored the opposition 68-5.

Unfortunately, the game just didn’t go Skiatook’s way. Fort Gibson’s Jose Estrada scored only 42 seconds into the match, and Grayson Ramey scored again in the second hand en route to delivering the title to the Tigers.

To make it to the championship, the boys went on an incredible run with some really close games as they worked to punch their ticket to the big game.

The run started with an overtime victory against Regent Prep, where Skiatook’s goal in extended minutes delivered the Bulldogs a 3-2 victory and a matchup against McClain, which turned into an 11-2 Bulldogs blowout...

Following the lopsided victory, the Bulldogs beat Holland Hall 3-2, and that set up a semi-finals matchup with Woodward.

The Woodward game was a defensive trench-fight, going scoreless through regulation and overtime. It came down to penalty kicks, where Skiatook had all four kickers score, and goalkeeper Derek Eckenfels blocked 2 Woodward shots to give the win to the Bulldogs.

And, reflecting back on the impressive season, sophomore captain Jace Dohn said, “We worked hard all season and even had to play through some tough injuries and people not being able to play, but the team kept going throughout the whole season, and even though some people doubted us in the playoffs, we still made it to the championship and I couldn’t be more proud of what the team did this year.”
