Football season is right around the corner, and the Skiatook Bulldogs team is gearing up for what hopes to be another long playoff run, following a great season last year that ended in the 5A State semi-finals against the eventual state champions.
With the first regular season game coming August 31st, the Skiatook Journal interviewed head coach of the team, Vance Miller, who will be starting his eleventh season as head coach of the Bulldogs. Coach Miller weighed in with some thoughts on the upcoming year, players to watch, expectations, and more.
Skiatook Journal: What are your thoughts on the upcoming season?
Vance Miller: We are all very excited about this upcoming year!
SJ: Lots of eyes are on Jayden Garner, but the team is bringing back lots of talent.
In your opinion, who are the leaders on the roster this season?
VM: Absolutely. Others include Jaxson Dohn, Korbin McLaughlin, Nick Rutledge, and Ross Easky.
SJ: Are there any under the radar players who you see as a good candidate to be a breakout star?
VM: It’s early to speculate, but there are several younger players that could have a chance at this.
SJ: How do you follow a deep playoff run last season?
VM: I think the key is to stay healthy and take one game at a time. We’re aiming to get better every week.
SJ: What is the team slogan for this year, following "Tough People Win" from last season?
VM: The team slogan for this year is “Connect.”
SJ: What would you like to say to the fans and support regarding the upcoming season?
VM: We look forward to seeing them at the games and thanks for the support.
SJ: Any other additional comments you would like to make?
VM: Dereck Eckenfels will be a big part of our team with his kicking and punting. His special teams ability will help us a lot.
