In the first round of the 5A State playoffs line, the 5A-4 No. 4 Skiatook Bulldogs (regular season 7-3, 4-3 District 5A-4) fell to the 5A-3 No. 1 Bishop Kelley Comets (8-2, 7-0 District 5A-4) 31-0 to end the season. Despite the disappointing loss, the Bulldogs had a good season. Skiatook started the year 4-0 and ranked #2 in class 5A before a narrow loss at home to Tahlequah. The Bulldogs had several blowout wins, and all of their losses were close games, but ultimately the team’s inconsistent offense resulted in an early playoff exit. Regardless, the players should keep their heads high. The season was full of lots of exciting moments and brought the community together every Friday night. The cheers for the team and fun had by all throughout the season were the biggest win of all, no matter what any scoreboard read. In the first round playoff game, things never truly went Skiatook’s way from out of the game. Bishop Kelley scored two first-quarter touchdowns and put Skiatook in its biggest first-quarter deficit of the year, and more scores in the second gave Kelley a 24-0 lead at the half. The first score came less than 2 minutes into the game, when Skiatook, trapped on its own goal line, mishandled a punt. After a scuffle, this resulted in a scoop and score for the Bishop Kelley. To follow that up, the Comets forced a stop and then scored a second touchdown in the first quarter, this one coming on a 29-yard wildcat run up the middle. The second quarter was more of the same, with Bishop Kelley driving down for a field goal, and then scoring another touchdown eight plays after blocking a punt at midfield. This score put the Comets up 24-0, and this is the lead they maintained at halftime. In the third quarter, Kelley found the endzone one more time, and a scoreless fourth closed the game out 31-0.
