On Thursday, Nov 8th, the second annual “Meet the Bulldogs” event was held in the Brooks Walton Activity Center. The event was sponsored by the Skiatook Hoops Club, aiming to get the community involved in attending games and raise awareness and support for the basketball program. Following a football season that ended in playoffs, the hopes are that the same enormous support group from the football team will carry over to on the hardwood. The Meet the Bulldogs night wasn’t limited to the high school, however. Skiatook basketball players, starting with second grade, were introduced to start the event was a busy night of lots of fun activities and good food to raise both awareness and funds for the basketball team. Throughout the basketball-filled night, a chili fundraiser also went on. A photo booth snapped pictures of friends, fans, and family with their favorite basketball players. Before the event, Shane Branscum, the boys’ varsity coach, shared his thoughts on the team in the upcoming year. “We only have one returning starter for sure, and that’s Casen Lester. He’s going to be an anchor and lead well this year,” said Branscum. “We’re a big team with lots of height and depth, and our wings are really talented. It could be a special season for these boys.” Coach Phillips echoed the excitement. “It’s going to be a great season,” he said. “We have good size, some speed coming up from the younger girls, and we’re working hard to mesh all that together. I’m really excited to see how far we can take this—they’ve been working very hard to grow as a team and we can take this really far.” It was a night full of great basketball, lots of fun, and many laughs, and the community seems to be rallying behind the teams.
