SKIATOOK — Jaedon Campbell picked up Tuesday night where he left off last weekend when he won most valuable honors in the Pryor Invitational. Campbell was 5-of-8 on 3-pointers and scored 17 points to help Class 5A No. 9 Pryor edge Skiatook 49-46 at the Brooks Walton Activity Center. The Tigers (14-4, 5-4), who don’t have any starters over 6-foot, were 8-of-17 on 3s through three quarters en route to a 39-29 lead. Jarett Gage, who scored 15 points, had Pryor’s three other 3s. “That’s usually what we do,” Pryor coach David Day said. “We shoot it fairly well, and live and die by it.” Pryor, however, was saved by its defensive effort in the last moments after the Bulldogs (8-10, 3-6) rallied and cut their deficit to 47-46. Skiatook’s Jayden Garner, who had eight of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, had a driving shot roll around and off the rim with 6.4 seconds left. Pryor’s Ryne Freeman was fouled as he gained position for the rebound and then made two free throws. Garner missed a tying 3 as time expired. “We’re usually pretty good defensively,” Day said. “I would like them to all be taller, bigger and stronger, but we can’t go make new players. We are who we are and they’re fun to watch. We don’t beat a lot of teams by 30 or 40, but we just keep winning. “Ryne is 5-9, but he’s one of our better rebounders because he does a great job of boxing out.” Pryor is 3-0 in games decided by three points or fewer. “It was tough. We were making bad turnovers, but we kept playing through the adversity,” Campbell said. “Defense is definitely an underrated part of our game because we score a lot of points most games and shoot the ball really well. All of us are starting to shoot our 3s better.” The Tigers rallied from an early 8-3 deficit and took a 16-12 lead as Freeman made three free throws after time expired in the first quarter and Pryor was never caught. Day said, “To win on the road is tough, especially on Tuesdays after tournaments, they’re usually upsets on this day.”
